If they didn’t have the authors or publishers explicit permission to distribute their books, then yes, I’d call that theft. I’ve had my own books pirated and it isn’t a great feeling not to have control over my own work. The archive should have worked WITH the copyright holders to ensure everything they were doing was above-board.
I think we’ve all dealt with pirates at some stage or another. Like you I have too. However some are scammers after credit card info and not pirates…I’ve seen both. At present I have an email bouncing back from one scammer… and i have a site taken off google search (only for my book) because the email bounced back… It’s a pain and one most of us can’t fight alone.
