How You Can Check Your Grammar Mistakes Before Publishing – by Lisa Brown…

All excellent points

 on Just Publishing Advice:

As a writer, you need to understand the importance of fixing your spelling errors and grammar mistakes.

Most programs do have a spell checker built in, but not many have a grammar checker.

There are many ways you can check your grammar and make sure you publish content that is correct and engages your audience without the distraction of improper writing.

If you are not familiar with the common grammar mistakes, you need to do your research first. Once you are aware of these, you have a better chance at identifying the uncommon ones.

There are many free grammar checkers online, but you have to be careful when selecting one.

How to get a mobi file of your book from Amazon #AmWriting #AuthorMarketing #Amazon

Thank you for the reminder 🙂

D.E. Haggerty

I recently joined a review group on Goodreads and was surprised to learn that there were still authors out there who don’t know how to get a mobi copy of their novel. If you don’t have a mobi (or some other ebook file such as epub), your reviewers are going to be stuck reading a pdf. Yuck! I don’t know about you, but if I’m forced to squint at a book to read it, I’m not going to be generous with my review. (There are other problems with pdf files as well such as lack of scrolling and inability to use table of contents properly.)

There’s a simple solution to this problem – get a mobi file of your book from Amazon. It’s super easy. Seriously.

Step #1 Log into kindle direct publishing.

Getting mobi file 1

Step #2 Scroll to the novel for which you need a mobi copy and place your mouse…

Writing About Family and Friends.

Writing your memoirs and trying not to offend family? Read this, it may help.

WordyNerdBird

Writing about family can be fraught with danger. The last thing you want to do as a writer is offend or alienate your family, especially if things are already fragile in some way.

That poses a challenge: what happens when there’s something you desperately want to write about? For starters, writers should know to always, always change names and details.  If possible, don’t mention names at all. Even when writing about positive feelings or experiences, people who aren’t used to putting themselves out into the public eye might hesitate to have something written about them and published. A great idea for a story or poem should never be pursued at the cost of an important relationship.

When I do write something about friends or family, I make sure they’ve seen it first, and I tell them I’m going to publish it. That way, they can’t say they didn’t know.

For example, I…

How to Make an Index (for a Nonfiction Print Book)

How to…Indexes for Non Fiction books

HOW TO MAKE AN INDEX

Having made an index for several different nonfiction print books over the years, I have a set of suggestions for how to create an index.

I prefer to do this manually. When I use the search tool that comes with an online article (or an eBook), I’m often disappointed. It easily pulls up every match of the word, which isn’t always helpful. If the word is used 200 times, I must then sort out which of the 200 are most relevant.

Also, search tools are sometimes too literal. For example, if I want to find information in a book relating to the moon, when I type the word “moon” in the search, it won’t show me pages where the author wrote the word “lunar” (unless the author also happened to write the word “moon” on the same page).

A manual index has the potential to…

How can I tell if a blog is worth writing a guest post for? #WriterWednesday #AmWriting

Guest Post Info

D.E. Haggerty

guest blogging 1

One of my goals for 2018 is to write more guest blogs. (In case you’re wondering, I’m failing spectacularly with this goal.) As I’ve talked about this goal, I’ve received a question I hadn’t expected: How can I tell if a blog is worth writing a guest post for? Initially, my answer was Who cares? Any publicity at all is good! I’ve since grown up a bit and realized that there are only twenty-four hours in day and, therefore, writers (and whoever else is writing a guest blog to gain exposure) can’t afford to spend their time writing guest blog posts for just anyone. So, how do you pick and choose blogs to query for a possible guest blog spot?

guest blogging 3The first step, after assuring the blog is accepting requests for blog posts, is a numbers game. How many followers does the blog have? This number can be deceiving, however…
