Formatting Issues Clients need to REMOVE

A short lesson today about formatting. Most formatting a client leaves in their manuscript can be removed easily, however, there are a few which can’t. Or, should I say, I’ve been unable to find a way so far. I’ve researched and looked and still nothing. They only way I can think of removing this particular error is by teaching the author/writer or client to not put it there in the first place.

This all comes down to INDENTS.  IF YOU CAN’T USE AUTO STYLES TO INDENT THEN PLEASE DON’T INDENT AT ALL!!

DON’T USE THE TAB – This is easy to remove when formatting. We don’t use the TAB because the INDENT is too big. Also If you end up wanted to go to TRAD PUBLISHERS they will want you to use AUTO STYLES and will reject most things without them. Please make sure you read their criteria for submissions if you do try TRAD PUBLISHING.

DON’T USE THE SPACEBAR – There is an easy way to remove this if there are TWO  or more SPACES. If there is less then it becomes an issue. If you are self-publishing it will mean your contractor (if you contract out for formatting) will charge you extra to remove them. It would be better if they aren’t there in the first place!!

WHEN YOU FIND ONE SPACE AT THE BEGINNING OF A SENTENCE THE ERROR IS TIME CONSUMING TO REMOVE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A LONG MANUSCRIPT. EACH AND EVERY ONE HAS TO BE REMOVED INDIVIDUALLY.

Most writers won’t notice they have them unless they work with the PILCROW SYMBOL, also known as Paragraph Mark (Shown below in the image.

When you use this symbol, it shows you where all your line spaces are, your extra spaces, double spaces, how your headings sit etc. In the next photo it shows you the extra space a writer has left behind. It is something most of us do. Even I have done this. for a formatter or interior book designer, it takes extra time and costs you – the writer, more.

In the last image, I have removed all the single dots you see at the beginning of each sentence so the manuscript sits perfectly. We have to do in and put the cursor behind the dot and backspace… on every single one. If there are TWO or more, it is easy to do and can be done in one go for the whole document.

Do you see the difference?  The SPEECHMARKS are now aligned with the first letter of the one above. This is what it should look like. Your formatter will INDENT your work for you, unless you already know how to do this correctly. AUTO STYLES can be confusing to use until you are using them consistently when you are writing.

Another thing to not use in a manuscript is SOFT RETURN. Luckily they are easy to remove, though make a mess of your manuscript once it is done. Use ENTER only when you do a new paragraph and hit ENTER TWICE if you have a change of scene. You don’t need a line space in dialogue or anywhere else unless the SCENE CHANGES or you have a NEW CHAPTER. Once again all these extra lines need REMOVING and they are done one at a time.

SOFT RETURNS are used on Blogs and Writing Sites like WATTPAD. If you are putting anything from a Blog etc into a manuscript then pleas remove the SOFT RETURNS – This is the little arrow you will see when you have the PILCROW turned on in your WORD DOCX. In the image blow is a sample of what a SOFT RETURN looks like.

These are the most common things we have to deal with when formatting for clients. Yes it is all doable, though if you wish to keep your budget on target then please learn to remove the above errors.

Inkitt – So Far

I was requested to write a post about Inkitt by one of my followers. Chloe King has not been there long and hasn’t updated her stories in a while. From what I can see. Mind she has released another Novella for everyone to enjoy. Here is the link and NOW BACK TO INKITT

Passion by the Sea can be found on Amazon.

INKITT is well set out. It has a lot of Authors from countries where English is a second language, meaning as a reader, you can struggle at times to work out what they mean. There are also those who don’t do their research.

When you start a new book you have to fill in all the different areas to be approved. It takes at least 24 hrs to get approval. You will also need some kind of book cover like you do on WATTPAD.

What I do like is their structure for REVIEWING a book. It is great. It gives you four areas to look at and comment on. You are not allowed negative commenting, though you can (if you’re a good reviewer) assess something in a positive way to help a writer build their story. Most will be grateful for your input. However, some won’t.

If you are a writer on there and swap a review, please be careful. If you give them a bad review then they will give you a worse one. How do I know…Well, I read Chloe’s reviews and she told me about one person who in fact didn’t listen. Mind it is their loss. This other writer deleted the REVIEW Chloe did for her book (YES YOU CAN DO THIS ON INKITT) I personally think this should be stopped. How can an author learn or readers get an indication of how good or bad a writer is if they can delete. On top of this, some writers get five-star reviews and they really shouldn’t. WINCES.

A lot of the stories are messy and need editing, however, you can find good reads too. Building up a following is hard unless you update frequently and share in the review blog area and on your social media.  Chloe doesn’t enter any competitions. Mainly due to hearing and reading things about INKITT which don’t seem right re – publishing with them and how they score stories, etc.

If anyone wants a picture of how to set up a story on INKITT let me know and I’ll write a post about it.

Overall INKITT is ok. Different from WATTPAD in different ways.

To Wattpad or Not to Wattpad

What a question!

Last year my client Chloe King looked into writing on Wattpad. Finding that Erotic Stories were acceptable she went ahead with her plan.  Except it isn’t as clear cut as that at all. Not even by a small bit.

One story was reported and pulled down. No email to the author, no chance to save the story and chapters…nothing. It just disappeared… GONE.  Luckily Chloe had most this particular story offline. However, she did email support…

A week…YEAH …a WEEK later they finally got back to her saying the book was reported, they looked into it and took it down.

WHAT THE HELL. WHY?

It was all consensual sex scenes of a married couple exploring and trying to enhance their sex lives…

Chloe put the story back up under a different title, same book cover. It was getting great feedback, lots of reads…over 135kWHEN…IT DISAPPEARED AGAIN. 135k plus reads…GONE. Her biggest book read.

Not only that, but another story also disappeared too.  GONE, NO EXPLANATION, NOTHING. One lost chapter and another short story…with no backup.  The short story was also totally consensual. Seven days ago, Chloe wrote to Support. No reply by day six…and she emailed them again…Still no reply.

As a business, I understand about taking down work which isn’t following guidelines, policies or terms and conditions etc. However, I would always email the author so they have an opportunity to update and or change something within the article which was reported. To wipe someone’s work…which was copyrighted…is beyond a joke.

I’ve since advised my client to leave WATTPAD. So far she hasn’t due to waiting on an email from them. I have no idea if she will or not. After all, she has over 170 followers as well…

As an author who has a few works on WATTPAD…I will be leaving.

NOT IMPRESSED
